Bored to Death Typeface Design
Boredom is characterized by perception of one’s environment as dull, tedious, and lacking in stimulation. Virtually everyone experiences boredom once in a while. Based on my research, I found that boredom is very harmful to our personal relationships with other people, our career and even our mental health. In What is Metaphysics? (1929), philosopher Martin Heidegger pointed out that without stimulus or focus, the individual is confronted with nothingness, the meaninglessness of existence, and experiences existential anxiety.
I am designing my typeface to show that boredom could be very dangerous to our mental well being. Through my typeface, the viewer will experience the emptiness, meaninglessness, dullness and depressiveness of boredom, hence realize the harmful aspects of this emotion.

Living Type Project - “SIMPLE?”
(in collaboration with Loh Biying, Neil Brian Alapide and Bryan Chen)
The inspiration behind this installation comes from a famous quote by Leonardo da Vinci. On the aesthetics of simplicity, the great master once said, ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’. This sparked off my group’s interest in exploring the tension between simplicity and complexity. Could something simple be complex at the same time? Could something complex eventually become simple? To address these questions, we must understand the dualistic forces within “simplicity” itself. Hence, the objective of our installation is to enable the audience to experience the dualistic nature of simplicity. At a glance, our installation looks like a random formation of paper boxes. However, as the audience approach the optimal viewing spot marked on the floor, they will come to a realization that the random formation is not random at all – it is arranged in a complex manner that when viewed from a particular spot, the phrase “SIMPLE?” forms. Similarly, when an audience approaches the physical installation from the optimal point where he starts off, the phrase “SIMPLE?” slowly disintegrates into random formation of paper boxes which resemble the look of building blocks. Simple? Let’s think again.
